IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Brother,
How are you? Hope you are as excited as I am for the get together this Wednesday. Unfortunately, I'm writing to let you know that my doctor's appointment is rescheduled on Wednesday . As it takes 2 hours up and down to visit and get back to my house I would not be able to get you from the train station.
Luckily, I've talked to my friend and he has agreed to pick you up. I have provided him with your phone number and exit station. Don't worry about getting inside the house as I have handed the keys over to him so that you can get in the house and get some rest.
Also, I've reserved a table at your favorite restaurant to spend some time in the evening after I get home. But, before that, the plan is to see Ozzy performing in the city hall and spend a lot of energy so that we can have our favorite sweets . Sounds like fun right?.
See you soon !
With love

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The letter includes relevant information for all three bullet points: it explains that a friend will collect your brother and has the keys, gives a plan for the evening, and indicates that you will join him after your appointment. However, the arrangements are not fully clear. The task asks how he can get from the station to your house, but the letter only says your friend will pick him up; it does not explain the route or otherwise clarify how he will reach the house. You also do not state a specific time when you will be home. The evening plan is present, though the sequence of the performance, restaurant and sweets is confusing. Make each arrangement explicit and develop the less clear details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The information is arranged in a generally understandable order: you explain why you cannot meet your brother, describe the key and pickup arrangements, and then discuss the evening. Paragraphing helps separate these topics, and phrases such as “Luckily” and “Also” signal transitions. Some connections are less clear, however. “I have provided him with your phone number and exit station” does not clearly explain what the friend will do with this information, and “But, before that” makes the order of the evening plans difficult to follow. The letter would progress more smoothly if you grouped the arrival details together and then stated the evening’s activities in a clear sequence, using references that make each person and plan unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a personal letter, including relevant expressions such as “pick you up,” “handed the keys over,” “reserved a table” and “get some rest.” These choices make the main arrangements understandable, and the tone is appropriately friendly. Some wording is imprecise or unnatural, though: “get together” is less suitable for a visit than “visit,” while “spend a lot of energy” does not naturally describe attending a performance. “Exit station” is also unclear in this context. Aim for more precise collocations and wording, especially when describing travel and evening activities. This would make the message sound more natural without losing its warm, informal style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including “As it takes 2 hours … I would not be able to…” and “so that you can get in the house.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the grammar does not prevent the reader from following the main message. Some errors in sentence construction and punctuation remain. For example, “my doctor's appointment is rescheduled on Wednesday” uses an awkward tense pattern; “has been rescheduled for Wednesday” would be clearer. The sentence beginning “As it takes…” also needs a clearer subject, such as “As the journey takes…”. There are inconsistent spaces before punctuation and a question mark followed by a full stop in “right?.”. Continue using complex sentences, while checking tense, sentence subjects and punctuation.
