IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sister,

I hope you are doing well. I heard from mother about your arrival at my place. She told me that you will come here on saturday. I am very much pleased to hear this news.Nevertheless, I have to go to jehlum to attend the science STEAM competition. That's why i will not be there to receive you. I will give keys of the house to aunt Rubina who is living in our neighbours.

When you will get off from the train, hire some rickshaw or taxi standing nearby and reach home. I will send you the address of my new home. You just show it to the vehicle's driver and he will take you to straight at my address.

When you will reach home, have some snacks and meal. I would have prepared everything and kept in the fridge. You will have to take out and heat them upto you choice beofore eating. I will reach in the evening and will spend a lot of time together. We will go out for some recreation.

I hope you will understand my situation.

Yours sincerely,

X.Y.Z.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that Aunt Rubina will hold the keys, give a basic route from the station by taxi or rickshaw, and say you will return in the evening and go out together. The purpose and friendly relationship are clear. However, some details are less fully developed than others. For example, “living in our neighbours” does not make it clear exactly where your sister should find Aunt Rubina or how to contact her, and “show it to the vehicle’s driver” depends on sending an address that is not yet included. The evening plan, “some recreation,” is also quite general. Give precise key-collection instructions and suggest a specific activity to make the arrangements more complete and useful.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: you explain why you will be away, describe the journey and food arrangements, then discuss your return and evening plans. Paragraphing and time markers such as “When you will get off” and “I will reach in the evening” help the reader follow the message. The overall organisation is clear, and the letter format is appropriate. Some linking is mechanical, however, with repeated “When you will…” constructions, and the transition from the key arrangement to the travel directions could be smoother. The food instructions also interrupt the focus on the requested evening plan. Group related information into clearer paragraphs and use more varied, natural transitions to make the progression feel more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main arrangements, including “arrival,” “competition,” “rickshaw,” “fridge,” and “recreation.” These choices show some range beyond very basic wording, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “reach home,” “take you to straight at my address,” and “go out for some recreation.” There are also spelling and capitalization slips, including “saturday,” “jehlum,” “i,” and “beofore.” These errors make the language less controlled, although they do not prevent understanding. Work on natural collocations for travel and leisure, and proofread spelling and capitalization carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including “That's why I will not be there to receive you” and “I would have prepared everything and kept in the fridge.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “When you will get off” and “When you will reach home” use an unsuitable future form after “when”; use “When you get off” and “When you reach home.” In “You will have to take out and heat them upto you choice,” the pronoun and sentence structure need correction, for example, “You can take them out and heat them to your liking.” Review verb forms in time clauses, pronouns, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
