IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Rita ,

How have you been ? I am so excited to have you here for coming weekend.I have planned list of things to do for your stay here and make your experience extremely memorable.

only concern is that you will be arriving on friday september 29 by atal express at 8:00 in the morning , I am scheduled as an incharge of conducting an important team meeting in regards to a new project so I wont be able to pick you up from railway station. However I have my best friend who is willing to help us and is going to pick you up as she drives.

She has a spare keys of my place and she would also be staying with us for the weekend.I would be home by 6:00 pm.

I have planned a memorable night out with your favourite food which is sushi with green sauce. We would watch your favourite movie and hang out with our favourite drinks. I would show you my favourite spot to spend some quiet time with natural surroundings.

I cant express how excited i am to spend time with you , its been like a decade since we were together like this. Can't wait to see you here. Have a safe journey.

Best regards,

Vishwa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the situation and include a friendly greeting, explain that you cannot collect Rita, mention your friend has a spare key, give your expected return time, and suggest evening activities. However, the key arrangements are not fully clear: you say your friend will pick Rita up and has a key, but do not explain how Rita will actually enter the house or whether the friend will be there when she arrives. The route from the station to your home is also missing; saying your friend will collect her does not provide the requested directions or travel details. The evening plans are relevant but briefly listed rather than developed. Clarify each practical arrangement and add a specific route or transport plan.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable sequence: you introduce the visit, explain the morning situation, describe the key arrangement, and finish with evening plans and a warm closing. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and linking expressions such as “However” and “so” support the flow. Some connections are unclear, though. For example, the paragraph about your friend does not explain how her pickup relates to Rita getting into the house, and “She has a spare keys” is followed by the separate point that she will stay for the weekend without clarifying the arrangement. Use clearer references and transitions to show exactly what happens after Rita arrives, then move naturally to your evening plans.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a personal letter, including phrases such as “scheduled,” “spare keys,” “memorable,” and “natural surroundings.” The warm tone is appropriate, and the reader can understand your main message. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “planned list of things to do,” “incharge of conducting,” and “favourite drinks” do not express the intended ideas as smoothly as they could. “Atal Express” and “railway station” are specific and understandable, but the practical travel details need more precise vocabulary. Aim for natural combinations such as “made a list,” “leading a team meeting,” and “directions from the station,” while checking spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “I am scheduled…” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are noticeable. Examples include “a spare keys” (article and plural agreement), “for coming weekend” (missing article), and “I would be home by 6:00 pm,” where the tense does not fit as naturally as “I will be home.” Several sentences also run together without appropriate spacing or punctuation, such as the opening and the final sentence before “Can’t wait.” Review articles, agreement, tense consistency, capitalisation, and sentence boundaries to make the letter more accurate.
