IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Pankag,

I hope you are doing well!

I am writing this letter in order to inform you that, during your arrival I will not be at my home and I want you to follow my steps so that you will not face any difficulities while reaching here.

Firstly, I will place keys under door from where you can operate the door and come inside. Furthermore, you can catch taxi from outside the railway station and tell him my address and give him only 30 dollars because it is not worth more than that.

After that, please find some food in microwave, which I will keep warm for you and then you can enjoy television or Playstation.

I am really sorry that I will not be able to greet you there, but trust I will be at home sharp 5 pm, then we both enjoy moments and will recall old memories.

I hope you will understand my emotions and cooperate with me.

Warm regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you explain where the key will be, give a way to travel from the station, and say you expect to be home at 5 pm before suggesting time together. These details make the message relevant and practical. However, some parts are less fully developed than others. The directions rely only on taking a taxi and giving the driver your address, so adding a landmark or clearer route would help your relative find the house. The key arrangement is also potentially unclear or insecure because you say it will be “under door”; specify exactly where it is and how to use it. The evening plan is warm but could be more concrete than recalling memories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a generally sensible order: arrival and access, food and entertainment, then your return and evening plans. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “After that” help the reader follow the arrangements, and the letter format is clear. This meets the lower-band expectation of an overall coherent arrangement and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the transitions are somewhat mechanical, and the food and entertainment details interrupt the main sequence of arrival arrangements and your return. Group related information into paragraphs—for example, access and travel together, followed by what to do while you are away and the evening plan. A clearer link between the taxi directions and the house would also improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the practical arrangements and a friendly tone, including “railway station,” “microwave,” and “recall old memories.” However, several choices or combinations sound unnatural or imprecise, such as “operate the door,” “during your arrival,” and “give him only 30 dollars.” “Difficulties” is also misspelled as “difficulities.” These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of the vocabulary. Aim for common, precise collocations in a personal letter: for example, say where the key is “hidden,” that the taxi fare “should be about” a stated amount, and that you will be “home by” a particular time.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, such as “I am writing this letter in order to inform you that…” and the sentence beginning “I am really sorry…”. The main meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “I will place keys under door” needs articles and a clearer noun phrase, while “then we both enjoy moments” needs a suitable future form, such as “then we can enjoy the evening together.” In “tell him my address and give him only 30 dollars,” the pronoun reference is unclear. Check articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, and use a few well-controlled complex sentences rather than joining several ideas loosely.
