A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Alina,
I am so pleased to know that you are coming at my place and will stay with me for few days. Unfortunately, I would not be available in the morning due to my duty, but I would make sure you won't face any problem to reach at my home.
As you would be arriving tomorrow in the morning, I would give the house keys to an aunt at the next door. After reaching at my place, just ring the door bell of Mrs. Johson and tell her my name and introduce yourself as I have already informed her that my sister is coming. She would definitely give you the keys to get into the home.
One more thing, let me tell you how to get from railway station to my house as this can confuse you whether to travel on bus or hire a taxi. In my opinion, the former option would be best for you because taxi drivers sometimes asked for huge fare, whereas bus is not only cost-effective but also safer to travel. Just get on the bus and get off on the Red Street stop. From there you just have to walk 5 minutes to be on my address that I have already sent you.
Although I wouldn't be at home when you will arrive, I will be there at 5pm and you can have some rest after a long travel till then. In the evening, we can catch up on all the gossip after having dinner. Moreover, I have planned to watch your favourite move together at night. I'm sure it will be a great fun.
I'm anxiously waiting to see you tomorrow.
Take care and have a safe journey.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You cover all three requested points clearly: Mrs. Johnson will provide the keys, the bus route and walking directions are explained, and you say you will be home at 5 p.m. with plans for dinner and a film. The practical details make the arrangements easy to follow, and the friendly tone suits a letter to a relative. The evening suggestions are especially well developed, while the route could be made slightly more precise by adding a landmark or clearer walking directions from the stop. Overall, the response fulfils the task well, with only a small opportunity to make one set of instructions more specific.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter has a clear progression from the greeting and explanation of your absence to the key arrangements, travel directions, and evening plans. Paragraphing separates these topics effectively, and linking expressions such as “One more thing,” “Although,” and “Moreover” help the reader follow the sequence. The closing is also appropriate and maintains the personal tone. Some transitions are a little formulaic, and “Although I wouldn't be at home when you will arrive” repeats information already given near the beginning. You could make the flow more natural by varying transitions and avoiding this repetition, while keeping the clear paragraph structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a personal letter, including useful expressions such as “cost-effective,” “catch up,” and “anxiously waiting.” These choices communicate the arrangements and friendly tone effectively. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “coming at my place,” “reach at my home,” and “on my address” do not sound natural in English. There are also spelling or word-form slips, including “Johson” and “move” for “movie,” and “a great fun” is not idiomatic. More precise, natural phrases would improve fluency and show stronger control of everyday vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including subordinate clauses with “because,” “whereas,” and “Although,” and most of the message remains easy to understand. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “I would not be available” and “I would give” use conditional forms where the planned events call for “will not be available” and “will give.” In “when you will arrive,” use “when you arrive,” and “taxi drivers sometimes asked” should be “sometimes ask.” There are also article and preposition problems, such as “for few days” and “at the next door.” Correcting these patterns would make the varied sentence structures more consistently accurate.
