A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Uncle,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I have urgent work in the morning which i have to do ,otherwise I have to pay penality for that.

I know that you are coming to me for staying somedays with me and I was really happy to know that and started making planes to pick you . But unfortunately, beacause of my work I am unable to come. So, know I ask my freind to pick you from station , he will drop you at home and I already give keys to him. You can collect key from him and take rest at home. I already made food for you , which you like the most . Afterthat, you can take some rest , then I will come in the evening ,then we will go for shopping ang watch a movie .

I am sorry for the inconvenience ,but I hope you can understand my situation. but dont worry we will do fun for the next whole week . thank

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You address the main situation and include several relevant arrangements: a friend will meet your uncle, take him home, and provide the keys; you also say you will return in the evening and suggest shopping and a film. However, the directions from the station are not actually explained—the friend is only said to “pick you from station”—so one task point is incomplete. The reason for your absence is mentioned, but “urgent work” and the possible penalty are not explained clearly. The evening plan is also brief, and the letter ends abruptly with “thank.” To strengthen the response, give clear travel instructions or explain exactly how your friend will identify and meet him, then close the letter appropriately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The ideas are presented in a generally understandable order: you explain why you cannot meet your uncle, describe the key arrangement, and then mention your evening plans. Basic linking expressions such as “But unfortunately,” “So,” and “Afterthat” help show the sequence. However, the response is written as one long paragraph, and several ideas run together, particularly around the friend, keys, food, and evening plans. Repeated use of “then” and “but” makes the connections feel mechanical, while the final “but dont worry” does not connect smoothly to the preceding apology. Use separate paragraphs for the arrangements and evening plans, and vary linking phrases to make the progression clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough everyday vocabulary to communicate the main arrangements, including “collect key,” “take rest,” and “go for shopping.” The language is generally understandable, but the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “coming to me for staying somedays,” “making planes,” and “do fun.” Spelling errors—including “penality,” “beacause,” and “freind”—also make the writing less polished. Choose more natural expressions for hosting and travel, and check spelling carefully. For example, “stay with me for a few days,” “make plans,” and “have fun” would express your meaning more idiomatically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences, for example, “I know that you are coming to me for staying somedays with me and I was really happy to know that,” but these are often faulty or difficult to follow. There are frequent problems with sentence boundaries and punctuation, as in “I have urgent work in the morning which i have to do ,otherwise I have to pay penality for that.” Verb forms and sentence construction also need attention: “I already give keys to him” should use a past participle, and “I ask my friend” needs a consistent tense. Capitalisation is inconsistent, including lowercase “i” and the sentence beginning “but dont worry.” Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses.
