IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Suraj

I would like to inform you that I have an urgent meeting in my workstation at the same time of your arrival time at the train station. Unfortunately, I would not be able to show up at home till evening.

As you are coming to my home first time and it would be hard to find my place. So I have scheduled a cab which would pick you on time and drop it at the exact location.

I had already got an information that you are coming to live in to my house for the couple of days. Due to this i had ordered a spare keys which is delivered next to the neighour' s house and you could collect from them and can enters inside the house and relax.

Althought I will reach home late night, I booked a table in the nearby restaurant which is newly opened. After long time ,we would enjoy our dinner while spending quality time together.

I am looking forward to see you soon.

Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that a cab will collect Suraj, describe how he can obtain a spare key from a neighbour, and suggest dinner together. The purpose and friendly tone are clear. However, some arrangements are not fully explained. For example, “scheduled a cab” does not say how your relative will identify or contact the driver, and “next to the neighbour’s house” is unclear about exactly where the key will be left or which neighbour to approach. The evening plan is relevant, but “late night” gives little indication of when you expect to arrive. Add practical details and clarify the timing so each arrangement is easy to follow.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: your absence, transport, access to the house, and the evening plan. Separate paragraphs help the reader locate each arrangement, and the opening and closing are appropriate for a personal letter. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some progression. However, links between ideas are occasionally mechanical or unclear. The opening “As you are coming to my home first time…” is not smoothly connected to the cab arrangement, while “Due to this” does not clearly identify what caused the key arrangement. Improve cohesion by making these relationships explicit and using clearer transitions, such as “To make the journey easier” and “As you’ll be staying for a few days.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “urgent meeting,” “spare keys,” “nearby restaurant,” and “quality time.” These choices communicate the main arrangements and help maintain a warm, personal tone. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision: “show up at home” is less suitable than “be home,” and “drop it at the exact location” uses an unclear pronoun for the relative. “Ordered a spare keys” and “neighour” also show word-form and spelling problems. Aim for natural collocations and precise references, for example, “arranged for a taxi to take you to my house” and “left a spare key with my neighbour.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “As you are coming…” and the time clause “while spending quality time together.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “I would not be able to show up at home till evening” needs a more natural time expression and article, while “you could collect from them and can enters” mixes modal forms and uses an incorrect verb form. “I had already got an information” also has an article problem. Practise keeping modal verbs consistent (“could collect … and enter”) and checking articles and tense choices in each sentence.
