IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

dear clair,

I hope this letter will find you peak in your health, I am glad to know that you are coming to stay with me on 20th November at this weeklend.

As you know that right now i am working with a multinational company and Chirstmass celebrations are going to start from the first week of December. unfortunatlly, i will be out of town for a meeting on that day, and will return late in the evening.

To reaching my home is not difficult especially by train as my house is not far away from Northen lake station, Outside the station there are yellow lane taxies which take you directly to my residence. Moreover, my keys are in the letter box of my house and its paasword is XY0023.

i will try to be early in the evening, i know you always enjoy to go lake side so we will go there for dinner and drinks.

Eagerly waiting for you.

Yours lovingly

lucifer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The letter covers the three requested points: it explains that the keys are in the letter box and gives a password, provides a route from the station by taxi, and says you will return in the evening and proposes dinner and drinks by the lake. These details make the message relevant and generally understandable. However, some arrangements are not fully clear: the reader is not told exactly how to identify the house or whether the taxi needs a specific destination, and “I will try to be early” leaves the arrival time uncertain. The reason for your absence is included, but the plans for the evening could be developed more clearly. Give precise, practical instructions and make the proposed timing explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The information follows a broadly sensible order: greeting and visit, explanation of your absence, directions and key arrangements, then evening plans and closing. This helps the reader locate the main points. However, the letter is divided into paragraphs without a fully smooth progression, and some links are awkward or unclear. For example, “As you know that” does not connect naturally to the explanation, while “Moreover” joins the key information to the directions even though the relationship is not especially clear. The final plan is also introduced abruptly. Use clearer paragraphing for the practical arrangements and evening plans, and choose linking phrases that show the relationship between ideas more precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main arrangements, including “out of town,” “letter box,” “directly,” and “dinner and drinks.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “multinational company” and “lake side.” However, spelling errors and unnatural word combinations are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “weeklend,” “Chirstmass,” “taxies,” and “Eagerly waiting for you” are examples. Some choices are also imprecise, such as “yellow lane taxies,” which does not clearly identify the type of transport. Aim for accurate, natural phrases and check spelling carefully; this will make the letter sound more fluent and reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, such as the sentence explaining that you will be away for a meeting and return later. The main message is usually understandable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation are frequent enough to affect fluency. For example, “I hope this letter will find you peak in your health” has an incomplete grammatical pattern, and “To reaching my home is not difficult” uses an incorrect verb form. The opening sentence also joins two independent ideas with a comma. Practise accurate infinitive and gerund patterns, sentence boundaries, and consistent capitalisation of “I.” Shorter, well-controlled sentences would improve clarity.
