Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Kamau,
Ihope this letter finds you well? A writing to inform you that my boss changed our working scheduke and I wount be at home when you arrive.
Once you arrive at the train station, use the ubber application to order an uber ride. On the destination profile type Kahawa West. The last time I used an uber it charged me two thousand shillings. On uber will come to where you will be tanding. Take the ride to Kahawa West and once you get to my gate, there is a flower pot on the left side. Beside it, you will see a single key to my house. Get in to the house and feel at home.
I will be back at 0900hrs and I will come with pork and rice for dinner. We will play scable and watch movie as we catch up.
I wish you a safe journey as you come to Kahawa West.
Yours faithfuly cousin,
Joshua.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three required points: you explain that a key is hidden beside the flower pot, give directions from the station using a ride-hailing app, and say when you expect to return and what you could do together. These details make the message practical and relevant. However, some parts are less fully developed or could be clearer. For example, “Kahawa West” is given as the destination, but the reader may need a more precise address or landmark to find your house. “I will be back at 0900hrs” is also potentially confusing because the relative arrives in the morning and you say you will be home in the evening. Clarifying the time and adding a little more detail about the evening plan would make the arrangements more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a sensible order: you explain your absence, describe the journey and key, then give your return time and evening plans. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “Once you arrive” and “once you get to my gate” guide the reader through the instructions. This gives the letter a coherent overall progression. Some connections are less smooth, however: “On uber will come to where you will be tanding” interrupts the directions and is difficult to follow, while the sequence from entering the house to the dinner plans could be linked more naturally. A clearer sequence of steps and more precise referencing would make the cohesion feel less mechanical and support an even smoother flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant everyday vocabulary for the situation, including “train station,” “flower pot,” “single key,” “dinner,” and “catch up.” These choices communicate the main arrangements, and “feel at home” is a suitable friendly expression. However, the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “scheduke,” “wount,” “ubber,” “tanding,” “scable,” and “faithfuly.” Some phrasing is also imprecise: “destination profile” is not a natural way to describe entering an address in an app, and “On uber” does not clearly identify the driver or vehicle. Check spelling carefully and choose more precise expressions for travel instructions; this will make the letter sound more natural and reliable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and some longer structures, such as “Once you arrive at the train station, use the ubber application to order an uber ride” and “Beside it, you will see a single key to my house.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, and the instructions are generally expressed directly. Some grammatical errors remain, though. “Ihope this letter finds you well?” has incorrect sentence punctuation, and “A writing to inform you” lacks a correctly formed subject and verb. The sentence “On uber will come to where you will be tanding” also has an unclear grammatical structure. Review complete sentence formation, question and statement punctuation, and consistent use of future forms. More accurate control of these patterns would make the message easier to read.
