Student answer (Band 6.5)

In several countries, recycling the garbage by individuals is minimal compared to ones who actually have to recycle. In this essay, I will discuss reasons behind this cause and suggests a few measures to mitigate this issue.

To commence with, the lack of education among individuals is one of the causes to have less recycle rate. To elaborate on this, recycle is latest investment for reducing environmental pollution. As a result of this, the public is not aware how recycling technique works. Furthermore, recycling is time consuming which prevents individuals to utilize at a daily basis. For instance, one survey in Toronto indicates only 20% of individuals were recycling products as it took 40 minutes to complete the process. Consequently, ratio of garbage recycling is declined as much as they could.

On the other hand, there are some effective measures that can enhance recycling wastes. Firstly, government should run awareness campaign before they implement recycle process. It gives clear as well as efficient directions for society to recycle the garbage. Apart from this, they can encourage utilizing recycle through advertisements. For example, people inspired more to opt a recycle habit after demonstration of recycling materials on television and newspapers. In addition to this, local municipality also gives rewards to individuals which attracts public to opt recycling with more efficiency.

To conclude, although recycling is not widespread due to its lack of awareness and latest invention, there are few measures to address recycling such as awareness campaigns, rewards, and advertisements. These can significantly promote the recycling.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the lack of education and the time-consuming nature of recycling. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about recycling being a 'latest investment' is unclear and lacks logical depth. While the essay provides examples like the Toronto survey and government campaigns, the explanation of these points could be more fully extended to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, but the overall development of ideas remains somewhat superficial.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'On the other hand,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'As a result of this' used to link unrelated ideas. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the opening sentence where the comparison 'compared to ones who actually have to recycle' is vague. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, but the use of cohesive devices could be more natural and precise.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices or incorrect collocations, such as 'recycle rate' instead of 'recycling rate,' 'utilize at a daily basis' instead of 'practice on a daily basis,' and 'latest investment' which does not fit the context. While the meaning is generally clear, the student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles with more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions. To improve, the student should focus on learning collocations and using more precise terminology related to environmental issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include 'suggests a few measures' (subject-verb agreement), 'recycle is latest investment' (missing articles), 'prevents individuals to utilize' (incorrect verb pattern), and 'ratio of garbage recycling is declined' (incorrect passive voice usage). While the meaning is usually understandable, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. More attention to verb forms, articles, and sentence structure is needed.
