Student answer (Band 7.0)

Increasing issues with garbage have become intense issues in today’s fast-paced, evolving world. Undoubtedly, it can be clearly seen that people avoid recycling their products because of the cost involve behind recycling process and the throwaway culture. However, to deter the issues, the government can make people vigilant through campaigns and enforce mandatory rules for people to comply.

To commence, the most significant factor to explain this occurrence is the cost of the recycling process. Some items, such as plastic, would be arduous to recycle, as it demands huge capital to process. Even though people waste their capital on it, the process will have a tremendous impact due to emitting toxic substances into the environment, causing numerous health issues for people, such as heart disease, lung cancer, etc. Another factor that provokes this trend is throwaway culture. Nowadays, because of industrialisation, people can get materialistic desires easily in fewer cost, which influences people to make expenditures on purchasing new things rather than using old ones.

To mitigate the issues, the most compelling steps that the government can take are to run campaigns to make people aware of the advantages of recycling. If people truly understand its importance, they will follow the to do recycle with the products they can and will start avoiding buying things they can not recycle. Furthermore, higher authorities can enforce rules on using products that can be recycled and impose a ban on manufacturing them. For example, the US government has banned the use and manufacturing of plastic bags, resulting in less trouble for the government and people to recycle.

To conclude, due to not having enough knowledge about the significance of recycling and the throwaway culture, people avoid recycling. However, the combined effort of people and the government can stop these issues though posing bans on items for use and manufacture.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the cost of recycling and the 'throwaway culture'. However, the development is somewhat uneven. For instance, the argument regarding the cost of recycling is slightly confused, as you suggest the process itself emits toxins, which is a debatable point that could have been clarified. The solutions provided, such as government campaigns and bans, are logical and well-aligned with the prompt. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully explained with more precise reasoning rather than relying on generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main questions. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To commence', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'To deter the issues' or 'follow the to do recycle'. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that referencing is precise would enhance the overall coherence of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'industrialisation', 'materialistic desires', and 'mitigate'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'cost involve behind' (should be 'costs involved in'), 'fewer cost' (should be 'lower cost'), and 'follow the to do recycle'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your expression. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the cost involve behind' and 'stop these issues though posing bans'. Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To progress, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
