Student answer (Band 7.0)
Waste disposal is one of the biggest challenges in several countries. Residents are not well aware of the difference between organic waste, non-recyclable waste and recyclable waste. This essay will examine the reason why it is happening before presenting the solutions to address this serious problem.
One of the main reasons is a lack of awareness. Individuals do not understand the difference between recyclable and non-recyclable waste. Therefore, they prefer to throw everything in the garbage. Secondly, in many countries, there are no strict rules and regulations to create fear among citizens. Moreover, people believe it is a waste of time to spend to separate recyclable materials because they are not well aware of their moral and social responsibilities, especially in today's busy and fast-paced lifestyle.
I think to solve this problem and increase recycling, governments should start awareness campaigns so that the general public can become aware of their mistakes and take appropriate action. Furthermore, the introduction of new strict rules and penalties is important so that everyone living in the nation can follow them. In addition, advertisements should be launched to promote social and environmental responsibilities of the general people to increase their involvement in this social cause.
In conclusion, numerous countries are facing the problem that individuals do not dispose of recyclable materials as much as they could, but there are many steps that they must take to tackle this challenge at a large scale. This is not just for countries but also for those who are living in those nations as residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the lack of awareness and the absence of strict regulations. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the suggestion of 'awareness campaigns' and 'strict rules' is mentioned but not elaborated upon with specific examples or logical consequences. To reach a higher band, you should provide more depth by explaining how these solutions would specifically overcome the barriers mentioned. The position is clear throughout, but the overall development lacks the depth required for a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the link between the final sentence of the conclusion and the rest of the essay is slightly weak, as it introduces a vague notion of individual responsibility that wasn't fully integrated into the main body.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'organic waste', 'non-recyclable', and 'environmental responsibilities'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common phrasing. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions that would demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'waste' and 'countries' multiple times.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. For example, 'Residents are not well aware of the difference' is a clear, error-free sentence. You demonstrate control over basic grammar, but the range of complex structures is limited. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of subordinate clauses, passive voice constructions, or conditional sentences to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
