Student answer (Band 6.5)

People do not recycle trash in a sufficient way as it needs to be done and this happens in many parts of the world. In my opinion, less awareness could be the biggest reason to it and along with some other reasons, i am going to explain this in upcoming paragraphs following by it's solution.

The biggest and foremost reason is the limited knowledge that means people do not have the adequate information about what recycling is?, How is it done? What recycling products are? and much more. This eventually, turns a recycle waste into a dump. For example, in a country like Africa, people are throwing the recycle goods in the compost waste that make it difficult to decompose natural waste to make natural fertilizers and this contribute to soil pollution also. Moreover, inadequate funds can also be a cause. To elaborate, recycling is done in a factory and machines which requires funds and this financial limitation results in less recycling.

To tackle these issues, the first solution is that the government of the country should organize some campaign in order to make people aware about the recycling, it's working procedures, it's contribution towards mitigating pollution and boosting economy. This will help general public to develop more ideas towards recycling, resulting in more employment and less pollution in the country. Further, local government or foreign investors can also help by investing in recycling projects that brings profit to them as well as to the local individuals.

In conclusion, limited knowledge and funds are the two biggest reasons of less recycling in many countries but the solutions like organizing campaign and investment by the local or foreign investors can help to mitigate this problem to a great extent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the lack of public awareness and the need for government intervention. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the example regarding 'Africa' is a broad generalization and lacks specific detail to fully support the argument. While the position is clear, the explanation of the solutions could be more nuanced to reach a higher band. Overall, the response covers the requirements of the task adequately, but the supporting arguments would benefit from more depth and specific, well-reasoned examples to move beyond a general overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for reasons and solutions, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'following by it's solution' or 'This eventually, turns a recycle waste into a dump.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, and some transitions between sentences feel forced. Despite these minor issues, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure provides a coherent framework for the reader to understand the writer's argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'recycle waste' instead of 'recyclable waste' and 'throwing the recycle goods' instead of 'recyclable items.' The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but the collocations are often inaccurate. While the meaning is generally clear, the limited range and the recurring errors in word formation and collocation prevent the response from achieving a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('this contribute to'), article usage ('the recycling'), and punctuation (the unnecessary question marks in the second paragraph). The use of apostrophes is also inconsistent, such as 'it's' used incorrectly for the possessive 'its'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable throughout the text. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips.
