Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by identifying causes (lack of information, government inaction) and solutions (laws, awareness campaigns). However, the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence in the conclusion. Furthermore, the word count is 247 words, which falls below the 250-word minimum requirement. While the ideas are relevant, the lack of a proper conclusion and the failure to meet the length requirement significantly impact the development of the response. To improve, ensure all parts of the prompt are fully addressed and that the essay is completed within the word limit.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay uses basic paragraphing and some cohesive devices such as 'To Begin with', 'Moreover', and 'On the flip side'. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. The abrupt ending of the essay disrupts the overall coherence, as there is no final summary or concluding thought. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the logical flow between sentences is sometimes interrupted by grammatical errors. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, logical structure that leads to a finished conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'rising concern' instead of 'a rising concern', 'ignorance from government' instead of 'government apathy', and 'if implied by the authorities' instead of 'if implemented'. Some terms are repetitive, and the use of 'extra' to conclude a list is informal. To improve, focus on learning collocations and using more precise academic vocabulary to convey your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('This issue have been', 'factors that supports'), incorrect verb forms ('can applied', 'fines should applied'), and punctuation errors, such as unnecessary capitalization ('To Begin with', 'Secondly'). Sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting complexity. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction limits the score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage.
