Student answer (Band 8.0)
Despite growing awareness of environmental issues, many people in numerous countries still fail to recycle their household waste as much as they could. There are several reasons for this, but I believe there are also effective measures that governments and individuals can take to address the problem.
The main reason why recycling rates are low is convenience. Most people lead busy lives and find it easier to throw all their rubbish into one bin rather than sorting it into separate containers for plastic, glass and paper. Furthermore, in some areas recycling facilities are either inadequate or non-existent. For example, in many parts of my home country, there are no recycling bins in public places, so people have no choice but to use general waste bins. Another factor is a lack of education. Many people do not fully understand the environmental impact of not recycling, or they assume that their individual actions make little difference.
However, this situation can be improved. Firstly, governments should make recycling more convenient by providing clearly labelled recycling bins in every neighborhood and by implementing a regular collection service. Secondly, financial incentives can be very effective. For instance, countries such as Germany have a "deposit return scheme" where people get money back for returning bottles and cans, which has dramatically increased recycling rates. Finally, education campaigns in schools and through the media are essential to raise awareness about the long-term benefits of recycling for the planet.
In conclusion, while convenience and lack of awareness are the key reasons why people do not recycle enough, the problem can be solved through better infrastructure, financial rewards and public education. If these steps are taken, recycling can become a normal part of daily life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt. You provide clear reasons for the lack of recycling, such as convenience and inadequate infrastructure, and offer practical solutions like financial incentives and education. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the mention of Germany’s deposit return scheme. The structure is logical, and the content is consistently relevant to the task. To reach a higher band, you could further expand on the 'why' by exploring the psychological aspect of habit formation or the role of corporate responsibility in packaging, which would add even more depth to your analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Furthermore,' 'For instance,' and 'Finally,' which help guide the reader through your arguments. The paragraphing is appropriate, and referencing is clear throughout. The flow is natural, and the transition between the problems and the solutions is seamless. The essay demonstrates a high level of control over the structure, making it easy to follow and coherent from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'growing awareness,' 'inadequate or non-existent,' 'financial incentives,' and 'dramatically increased' show a good command of language. The vocabulary is used accurately and helps convey your ideas precisely. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations could elevate the response further. However, the current level is well-suited for the topic and demonstrates a flexible use of language that is both natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences ('If these steps are taken...') and subordinate clauses ('...where people get money back...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no significant errors that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a solid grasp of English grammar. To reach the highest band, ensure that you continue to vary your sentence structures even more, perhaps by incorporating more sophisticated inversion or passive constructions where appropriate, though your current performance is already quite strong.
