Student answer (Band 6.0)

All around the world, people fail to recycle their junk. It is very possible by organised plan but due to being lazy more people avoid the process of recycling. Another reason can be hidden behind the education of it. In this essay, I will discuss these problems and possible outcomes to solve them.

There can be multiple causes linked to why the garbage is not being recycled properly. Due to high usage of time applied on daily activities like work and hobbies, people tend to be lazy towards the recycling problem and often avoid organising their garbage. I have seen a research that shows that most people just throw all the rubbish in one bin because they are not educated well enough by the government for the recycling process. Some countries like India and Nigeria have recently changed their policies but it was never received to the general public due to lack of advertisements.

To resolve these issues, Authorities need to change the idea of recycling and make the process easier. A study article shows that, Canada solved this problem in 1980s by providing recycling bins with assigned colours for the recycling materials. Scheduled days can also make big changes for a community and it can make the process easily understandable by people. Moreover, Advertisements on social media can be very helpful to teach the younger generations. In addition, A government representative per neighbourhood can deliver the message door to door to provide more education.

In conclusion, If people keep throwing the reusable materials in the garbage, it will have more risky effects on earth. In my opinion, Governments from around the world should start apply these possible solutions which can benefit the landfill sites and increase the percentage of people who recycle their junk.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as time constraints and lack of government education. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the mention of India and Nigeria is a good attempt at providing examples, but the explanation of why policies were not received is vague. The solutions provided, such as colour-coded bins and social media campaigns, are practical and directly answer the second part of the prompt. To reach a higher band, the student should expand on the 'why' behind these points with more detailed reasoning or specific evidence to ensure the argument is fully developed throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. There is a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Another reason', 'To resolve these issues', and 'In conclusion', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as 'the recycling problem' or 'the idea of recycling'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural flow. Overall, the structure is sufficient to guide the reader through the argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'landfill sites', 'reusable materials', and 'policies'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler terms like 'junk' or 'lazy'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'risky effects on earth' or 'start apply these possible solutions'. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express complex ideas with greater sophistication and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'It is very possible by organised plan', 'I have seen a research', and 'start apply these'. Punctuation is generally functional, though there are occasional errors with capitalization and article usage (e.g., 'In addition, A government representative'). The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the writing from being considered highly accurate. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional usage would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.
