Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. While the first body paragraph provides a clear reason (lack of education), the second paragraph is fragmented and lacks structural integrity. The conclusion is repetitive and contains incomplete sentences, which hinders the overall clarity of the argument. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that each paragraph contains a fully developed main idea supported by clear, logical explanations and specific examples, avoiding the disjointed phrasing seen in the latter half of the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the internal flow is frequently disrupted by grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore'), their effectiveness is limited by the surrounding sentence structure. The final paragraph is particularly problematic, as it contains fragmented thoughts and lacks a smooth transition from the previous points. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of incorrect word choice or awkward collocations, such as 'modern's era' instead of 'the modern era', 'folks' which is too informal for an IELTS essay, and 'dustmines' instead of 'dustbins'. Additionally, the repetition of basic terms like 'rubbish' and 'recycling' limits your score. To improve, focus on using more academic vocabulary and ensure that words are used in their correct context to convey your meaning more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people do not be awared'), incorrect verb forms ('not recycling the trash'), and missing articles. Sentence structures are often simple or contain errors when attempting complexity, such as the fragmented sentences in the conclusion. While the meaning is generally understandable, the persistent errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors will be essential for improvement.
