Student answer (Band 8.0)
In many countries, people do not recycle as much of their rubbish as they could. This is mainly because recycling is sometimes inconvenient, and many people are not sufficiently aware of its importance. However, governments and communities can take several measures to encourage better recycling habits.
One major reason for low recycling rates is a lack of convenient facilities. In some areas, recycling bins are not available in residential neighbourhoods, or people have to separate waste into several different containers. This can be time-consuming and confusing, so some people simply put everything in the general rubbish. Another reason is a lack of awareness. People may understand that recycling is beneficial but may not know which materials can be recycled or how their actions affect the environment. In addition, some individuals do not feel personally responsible for environmental problems because they believe that one person's behaviour will make little difference.
There are several ways to address these problems. First, governments should make recycling easier by providing clearly labelled recycling bins in homes, public places and workplaces. They should also introduce simple and consistent recycling systems so that people know exactly what can and cannot be recycled. Second, schools and the media can educate the public about the environmental benefits of recycling and the consequences of producing excessive waste. Finally, governments could introduce financial incentives, such as deposits on bottles and cans, or penalties for households and businesses that produce excessive amounts of non-recyclable waste.
In conclusion, people often fail to recycle because of inconvenience, confusion and insufficient awareness. Providing better facilities, educating the public and introducing appropriate incentives would make recycling easier and encourage people to develop more environmentally responsible habits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly identified two main reasons for low recycling rates—inconvenience and lack of awareness—and provided a comprehensive set of solutions, including infrastructure improvements, education, and financial incentives. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of 'deposits on bottles and cans'. Your position is clear from the introduction through to the conclusion, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'First', 'Second', and 'Finally', to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem analysis from the proposed solutions. The flow is natural, and referencing is clear throughout the text, making the argument easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the topic, such as 'inconvenient', 'sufficiently aware', 'environmental benefits', and 'financial incentives'. The word choice is precise and contributes to the clarity of your arguments. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, it stays within a standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to add nuance to your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'People may understand that recycling is beneficial but may not know which materials can be recycled'. The punctuation is accurate, and there are very few errors. The sentences are generally error-free, and the control over complex structures is consistent, which supports clear communication of your ideas.
