Student answer (Band 6.0)

In several countries such as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, people don't recycle their rubbish as compared to other developed countries like Britain, US and Canada. There are numerous reasons why people don't put considerable efforts on recycling but the primary reason is education.

One of the principal reason that why members of society do not recycle their rubbish is that they are environmentally illiterate. people have never been educated about the various types of rubbish and their respected dustbins. People who are not aware of different disposal system of raw materials, will always chuck rubbish in the same type of dustbin by not realising that they are pollution the environment. In addition, civic sense is also one of the causes. People generally coming from India and Pakistan don't have civic sense. For instance, people coming from low developing country to developed country, often get confused when they dump their rubbish because of different coloured dustbins found in the society and as a result, they throw everything in the same dustbin.

Education is the primary key to solve this problem. Educating people about the consequences that are caused due to the mixture of different types of rubbish could aware people. Government can organise monthly workshops and public awareness classes. Moreover, a separate civic sense class could be added in schools, including a special type of homework which is only be done with parents. As a result, this will not just benefit students but also parents and society as a whole. For example, illiterate parents assisting their children in completion of their homework and learning basic rules of protecting environment such as not mixing food and recycle products and homely methods to recycle items.

In conclusion, although there is limited awareness about the process of recycling, people could still acquire knowledge and multiple ways of recycling by government organised programmes. Many different ways could be implemented to improve the limited knowledge about recycling but educating people should be prioritised.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the lack of environmental education and the need for government-led awareness programs. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'civic sense' is a bit repetitive and relies on generalizations about specific nationalities, which weakens the academic tone. While the solutions are practical, they could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting arguments would benefit from more nuanced analysis rather than focusing on specific countries as the primary examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'Moreover', which help the flow of ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. There are instances where the progression between sentences feels a bit disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition from 'environmental illiteracy' to 'civic sense' is abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the central topic of each paragraph is generally clear, though the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive to improve the overall logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'environmentally illiterate' and 'raw materials', which is positive. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'put considerable efforts on' (should be 'into'), 'low developing country' (should be 'developing country' or 'less developed country'), and 'could aware people' (should be 'could raise awareness among people'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'One of the principal reason that why' (should be 'One of the principal reasons why'), 'they are pollution the environment' (should be 'polluting'), and 'which is only be done' (should be 'which can only be done'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. A greater variety of error-free complex structures would be needed for a higher score.
