Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recycling is a widely accepted debatable topic. In most countries, people are becoming careless in regards to recycle garbage. The reasons for this could be occupied schedule and careless behavior from tenants side. There are numerous solutions to solve this issue which would be discussed further below.

To commence with, people are busy with their schedule due to which they have less time to recycle stuff. People are always in hurry to their workplace or to meet their friends. This provides them with less time to think about recycling their garbage. People are not aware about the advantages of recycling the rubbish which could also benefit them. Moreover, the tenants are less bothered about recycling garbage. They always shows a careless behavior because they believe that the property they are living in does not belong to them. They are very well aware about the rules that if during garbage day the driver finds out the wrong garbage he will issue a ticket under owners name. As a result, they rarely show their responsibility towards recycling. For instance, if the organic garbage is mixed with plastic boxes the renters discard it without separating them.

There are numerous solutions to aforementioned problem. The government needs to make public aware about the benefits of recycling. This could be done by arranging a public speaker in society and in schools. In addition to this, an individual should be also take out some spare time of their daily routine to check upon the household things which could be recycled. For instance, the tin cans and plastic bottles should not be thrown and could be reused. Furthermore, the tickets should only be issued under the persons name who is responsible for wrong garbage. This will create a fear of heavy penalty in renters heart and they would be more careful while doing garbage.

To conclude, undoubtedly recycling is major problem for many countries because of lack of education and unbothered behavior by some individuals. However, this daunting problem could be tackled by some suggested solutions such as by providing good facilities by government to recycle and imposing penalties.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the 'busy schedule' and 'renter apathy,' and the solutions provided, like government education and policy changes, are logical. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For example, the point about renters not feeling responsible for property is a strong observation, but it could have been expanded with more depth regarding the psychological aspect of ownership. The position is clear throughout, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The use of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with,' 'Moreover,' and 'To conclude' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'This provides them with less time to think about recycling their garbage.' Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'organic garbage,' 'penalty,' and 'daunting problem.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'occupied schedule' instead of 'busy schedule' or 'tenants side' instead of 'tenants' perspective.' The repetition of the word 'garbage' throughout the text also limits the lexical variety. While the meaning is always clear, the range is not sufficiently wide or sophisticated to reach the 7.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'they always shows a careless behavior' (subject-verb agreement), 'an individual should be also take out' (incorrect modal structure), and 'under the persons name' (missing possessive apostrophe). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, which is characteristic of a Band 6.0 performance.
