Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation regarding why people do not recycle is limited to a lack of knowledge and bin placement. These points are relevant but could be expanded with more depth or specific examples. The position is clear throughout, but the overall argument lacks the sophistication required for a higher band. To improve, ensure that each point is fully extended with clear reasoning or illustrative examples that go beyond basic observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Additionally, the flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by grammatical errors, which makes some transitions feel abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas, even if the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be more fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision needed for a higher score. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word-choice errors, such as 'aware with these issues' instead of 'aware of these issues' and 'through inside the bins' instead of 'throw into the bins'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles with collocations. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise terminology related to environmental issues and recycling, and work on improving their grasp of word forms and common collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'clean environment plays'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'Government should aware the citizens'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and detract from the overall quality of the writing. The student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, verb tenses, and ensuring that complex structures are used accurately rather than just attempted.
