Student answer (Band 6.5)

In different nations of the world, it has become an increasingly significant issue that people do not reuse the product from the garbage that can be recycled. Although unawareness of environment damage and sedentary lifestyle are the major causes, I believe dividing rubbish kind into a separate bin and some awareness campaigns could eliminate this concern. The major reason is unawareness of atmosphere damage because in some countries people lack knowledge of environmental issues that results in keeping all the rubbish together, and they prefer to purchasing new items instead of reusing the existing ones. Moreover, due to hectic schedules, individuals have limited time, which forces them to go with convenience. Consequently, they use the same bins for all rubbish. For example, in India most of people keep the garbage, including recycled, non-recycled and organic, all together, which cause air as well as soil pollution. To control this situation, awareness campaigns by the authorities would be a great measure, which would allow people to learn about the concerns related to environment worldwide. For instance, in Canada people can get money in exchange of used plastic milk bottles from some companies. Additionally, there is an easy remedy of using different bins where people can throw organic, recycled and non-recycled rubbish separately. It would contribute to an environmentally friendly lifestyle. In conclusion, although busy schedules and lacking knowledge are crucial causes that jeopardize ecosystem, it would be controlled by adopting a few habits. In my opinion, these would work and environment pollution can be eliminated, which would be beneficial for human beings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the lack of awareness and the convenience factor. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For example, the explanation of why people prefer purchasing new items is brief, and the link between 'hectic schedules' and recycling habits could be more explicitly connected to the lack of infrastructure. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting examples, such as the mention of India and Canada, are helpful but could be integrated more smoothly to demonstrate a deeper analysis of the global context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'Additionally' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be more natural. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the causes and the solutions could be more sophisticated. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the repetitive structure of the arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language like 'ecosystem', 'environmental issues', and 'jeopardize'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'rubbish kind' instead of 'types of waste' and 'atmosphere damage' instead of 'environmental degradation'. The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Some phrasing is slightly awkward, which occasionally hinders the natural flow of the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'they prefer to purchasing' (should be 'prefer purchasing'), 'which cause air as well as soil pollution' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'in exchange of' (should be 'in exchange for'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly run-on. The control of complex structures is inconsistent, and the frequency of minor errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, despite the attempt at varied sentence forms.
