Student answer (Band 6.0)

Development is on going process in every sector of this universe but the scale of this depends from country to country. For the same reason, some countries are developed and others are underdeveloped. Those countries who are facilitating their residents with ways to trash their recycle items in separate bins, are one such example of being developed. While compromising with ways of recycling and throwing it on streets is injurious for the ecosystem.

In big cities, there is availability of three separate bins to trash the garbage as per their nature such as green bin for decomposed items, blue bin for recycle item and black bin for proper garbage. Furthermore, the presence of these bins make it far more convenient for the people to dump the garbage. On other hand, underdeveloped countries specifically in rural areas, it is easy to see empty plastic containers on roads which proves deadly for stray animals such as dogs, cows, cats and others. Additionally, in order to get rid of these plastic things, people are burning them which is polluting the environment by the release of carbon monoxide gas, a serious poisonous gas to inhale.

As a matter of concern, the government should step forward by establishing the factories who would recycle the items. For this purpose, collection of recycle items is crucial which can be done by regional authorities by place bins at accessible places. Over and above, educating the people is best method to start from the scratch. This can be done in various ways such as authorized person should go from village to village and impart the knowledge of recycling items such as ways they can be reused at homes further where they could dump it as well as improper disposal leads to detrimental impacts on ecosystem.

Overall, the sole responsibility belongs to government first to develop their cities in terms of infrastructure and later in terms of awareness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why people do not recycle as much as they could, and what can be done to change this. The writer discusses the lack of infrastructure in underdeveloped areas and proposes solutions such as government intervention and public education. However, the connection between global development and personal recycling habits in the opening paragraph is somewhat tangential and diverts attention from the prompt. Ideas are generally relevant, but the reasoning lacks full extension in places, particularly regarding the comparison between developed and underdeveloped countries. While the stance is clear, the development of ideas aligns more closely with the Band 6 descriptor, where all parts are addressed but some areas remain under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible progression of ideas from causes to solutions. Paragraphing is utilised, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases such as 'For the same reason' and 'Over and above' feel unnatural and awkward in context. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'throwing it on streets' where the pronoun antecedent is ambiguous. Furthermore, repetitive phrasing in transitional elements impacts the flow, placing this text firmly at the Band 6 level for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'ecosystem', 'decomposed items', and 'detrimental impacts'. However, there are frequent word-choice and collocation errors that hinder precision, such as 'trash their recycle items' instead of 'recyclable items', 'availability of three separate bins to trash the garbage as per their nature' rather than 'categorised according to type', and 'place bins' instead of 'placing bins'. Spelling and morphological issues are also noticeable, such as 'on going' instead of 'ongoing'. These inaccuracies keep the lexical score at a Band 5.5, reflecting a limited but minimally adequate range with noticeable errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambitious structures like 'Those countries who are facilitating their residents with ways to trash their recycle items in separate bins, are one such example of being developed.' However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent structural errors, such as missing articles ('establish the factories', 'place bins at accessible places'), incorrect preposition usage ('on streets' instead of 'in the streets'), and awkward subject-verb agreement or relative clause formations ('Those countries who are...'). While these errors do not wholly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a Band 6.5, making Band 6 the most accurate descriptor.
