Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring why people do not recycle rubbish and offering solutions to mitigate the problem. The student presents relevant ideas, such as emotional attachment to household items and the need for donation boxes and mobile applications. However, the interpretation of 'rubbish' leans heavily toward general clutter, old clothes, and sentimental items rather than municipal recyclables like paper, glass, and plastic, which somewhat narrows the focus. Additionally, some ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the extended examples about children's strollers and clothes. Despite these minor limitations, all parts of the task are covered with a clear stance and recognisable support, corresponding well to the Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the causes from the solutions, which aids readability. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as the repetitive use of transitions and logical connectors within the body paragraphs. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun reference errors like 'this kids' instead of 'these kids'. The logical progression is somewhat hindered by abrupt shifts between ideas and minor organisational issues, but the general flow remains manageable for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'emotional connected', 'effortlessly', and 'alleviated'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'tge' for 'the', 'preverse' for 'preserve', 'cloths' for 'clothes', 'furnitures' (which is uncountable), and 'Finaly'. These errors occasionally distract the reader, though they do not severely impede communication. The use of specific real-world examples like 'kijiji and marketplace' demonstrates a functional command of vocabulary, matching the requirements for Band 5.5 or 6.0. Given the frequency of basic slips, a score of 5.5 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition in sentence structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and articles. Examples include 'we discuss about the reason', 'It may leads to', 'People believes', 'this kids', and missing capitalization and punctuation in sentences such as 'the rubblish should be recycled. it is higy beneficial'. While these errors do not completely obscure the message, they occur with enough frequency to cause difficulty for the reader at times. The control of grammar is characteristic of Band 5.
