Student answer (Band 6.0)

Environmental pollution has become a major issue across the world. In most of the nations, individuals could recycled their wastage to certain level, however they do not do this. Not only has this shift been driven by several aspects of modern life, but it has also produced far-reaching repercussions for both individuals and society. This essay will examine the primary causes of this trend before analysing its significant solutions.

One major cause of not recycling waste is the unavailability or poor availability of recycling methods. Many countries do not invest on recycling plants where people could go to throw their recyclable materials. Moreover, if recycling methods available, they would be out of reach of local public, such as those plants would be in major cities only. Another contributing factor is lack of waste management education. Residents are not fully aware about the detrimental effects of waste on the environment and their health as well. Hence, they just dump everything in the garbage without considering its contribution to raise soil or air pollution. For instance, in India most of the population is not aware about the benefits of recycling which leads to landfills.

Turning to solutions, one sustainable solution is the development of more recycling plants. Governments should invest in recycling methods such as making industries which could be easily accessible by individuals. Furthermore, people should be aware about multifaceted impacts of dumping garbage. Authorities should make people aware about the bad impacts of waste on enviroment and long-term benefits of recycling material such as plastic, on society.

To conclude, although poor waste management system and lack of education lead people to not put their rubbish to recycling, this behaviour could be alter with initiative taken by government by making more plants and educating individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why people do not recycle as much as they could and suggesting viable solutions. The introduction clearly outlines the essay's direction, and both body paragraphs discuss distinct causes and corresponding solutions, such as the lack of recycling plants and educational initiatives regarding waste management. The ideas are relevant and supported with a general example about India, though some points, such as industry involvement, could have been developed with a bit more depth. Overall, the task is well-handled and meets the requirements of a Band 6.5 to 7.0, best aligning with Band 6.5 for addressing all parts adequately with some under-developed extension.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical arrangement. It is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude', although some referencing is slightly faulty or mechanical, such as 'this behaviour could be alter with initiative taken by government'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate causes from solutions. While the organisation is generally clear, occasional awkward transitions slightly limit the flow, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'environmental pollution', 'repercussions', 'detrimental effects', and 'multifaceted impacts'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the response, such as 'could recycled their wastage' instead of 'could recycle their waste', 'do not invest on' instead of 'invest in', and 'bad impacts' instead of 'negative impacts'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, matching the Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied grammatical structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('such as those plants would be in major cities only'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and preposition use, including 'could recycled', 'if recycling methods available', 'is lack of waste management education' (missing article), 'enviroment' (spelling), and 'could be alter' instead of 'altered'. These errors occasionally cause minor strain for the reader, though they rarely impede overall communication. This performance aligns with Band 5.5.
