Student answer (Band 8.0)

In many countries, people do not recycle as much household waste as they could. This is a serious environmental issue, and there are several reasons why recycling rates remain low. However, governments and individuals can take a number of practical measures to address this problem.

One major reason for low recycling rates is a lack of awareness. Many people do not fully understand the environmental consequences of throwing recyclable materials into general waste. For example, plastic, glass and paper can often be processed and reused, but people may simply discard them because they are unaware of how much energy and natural resources can be saved through recycling. Another contributing factor is inconvenience. In some areas, recycling facilities are limited, and households may not have separate bins for different types of waste. As a result, even people who are willing to recycle may find the process time-consuming or confusing.

Several steps could be taken to increase recycling rates. First, governments should introduce more effective environmental education programmes in schools and communities. Teaching children and adults about waste reduction and recycling could encourage people to develop environmentally responsible habits. In addition, local authorities should make recycling more convenient by providing clearly labelled recycling bins and regular collection services. Financial incentives could also be introduced. For instance, households that consistently recycle could receive small reductions in local taxes or other benefits. At the same time, governments could impose higher charges on businesses that produce excessive amounts of non-recyclable packaging, encouraging them to adopt more sustainable alternatives.

In conclusion, low recycling rates are mainly caused by insufficient public awareness and the inconvenience of existing recycling systems. By improving environmental education, making recycling facilities more accessible, and introducing appropriate financial incentives and regulations, governments can encourage people to recycle a much greater proportion of their waste.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly explaining why people do not recycle as much as they could and proposing practical solutions to change this. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the lack of awareness regarding environmental consequences and the inconvenience of limited recycling facilities. The solutions provided, including environmental education, better infrastructure, and financial incentives, are logical and extend the discussion effectively. The response meets all task requirements thoroughly, matching the Band 8 descriptor well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The text demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct and well-managed focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to the causes, solutions, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Another contributing factor', and 'As a result' are used effectively and flexibly to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently, ensuring that the structure supports the flow of ideas without feeling mechanical or obtrusive, aligning strongly with the Band 8 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The writer uses a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common items with good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'environmental consequences', 'sustainable alternatives', and 'financial incentives'. Word choices are generally precise, and there are only occasional minor inaccuracies. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the essay. While the range is broad and fluent, it stops just short of the flexible and sophisticated control required for Band 8, making Band 7 a solid and accurate fit.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
