Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing reasons why people do not recycle as much as they could (such as a busy lifestyle and perceived government responsibility) and suggesting solutions (such as spreading awareness and government incentives). However, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and superficial. For instance, the point regarding government responsibility is introduced with an example of a survey in India, but the explanation lacks depth. Similarly, the solution involving recycling machines in Punjab is stated briefly without fully exploring how this changes systemic behaviour. Despite these limitations, a clear position is maintained throughout the essay. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor, where all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas are under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is divided into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which provides a coherent overall arrangement. However, cohesion is frequently faulty or mechanical. The student relies on formulaic and sometimes inaccurate transitional phrases such as "to commence with", "to elaborate more", and "on the other hand, while considering the solutions". Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, and spacing or punctuation issues (such as missing spaces after periods in sentences like "could. There are..." and "schedule. for instance...") disrupt the flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but mechanical cohesion errors and weak transitions prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "contemporary world", "imperative information", and "mitigated". However, there are numerous word-choice and spelling errors that detract from the writing, including "indiviuals", "perdominent", "nowdays", "recyle", "saperate", "governemnt", "appopriate", "awarness", "campains", and "artifical". While communication is not severely impeded and the meaning generally comes across, these frequent inaccuracies across basic and intermediate vocabulary prevent the response from reaching Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at variety. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, and sentence structure. Examples include "rubbish is increasing day by day", "In handful countries", "which will dicuss in upcoming paragraphs", "after work do some relax", and "due to it many people take rubbbish". Punctuation errors, particularly missing spaces and incorrect capitalization at the start of clauses, are also prevalent. These persistent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect the characteristics of Band 5.0.
