Student answer (Band 6.5)

There has been a growing trend in many countries that people do not recyle their used waste products as they should do. There are many factors that contribute to this problem, however the significant ones include public unawareness about the importance of recycling and busy lifestyle. The development and the strong implementation of polices by the governments could help to effectively tackle this issue.

Many individuals are not sufficiently educated about the damage that waste causes to the environment and eventually human well-being. They believe that very small quantiy of their household waste is not a big issue. They emphasize that industries and restaurants that produce tons of waste every month should proritise recycling. Moreover, there is another group of people who is educated and well-aware of devestating consequences of not recycling waste products. Due to their busy schedule, they find it difficult to collect the recyclable waste and dump it to recycling centers once a week.

Waste quantity is growing at an accelerated rate, and if this issue remains unaddressed, results would be catastrophic. To resolve the problem, governments need to implement and strongly enforce recyling policies.

Recyclable waste should be collected daily from each street. So that individuals with busy schedules are also able to dump their waste propely. Additionally, fines should be charged to the person who violates the policies. Along with that arranging seminars at towns level can be an effective way to create public awareness.

In conclusion, growing amount of waste each year is a concerning problem that threatens our ecosystem, our environment, and ultimately human well-being. Governments and individuals should work together to tackle this problem and make earth a safe place to live for our future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying causes, such as public unawareness and busy lifestyles, and proposing solutions like government policies, daily waste collection, and educational seminars. The position is clear throughout. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this level. For instance, while the causes are introduced clearly, the explanation regarding busy individuals could be extended further with more specific examples. The solutions are relevant and outlined adequately, showing parts of higher-level development such as suggesting daily street collection and fines, though the support remains somewhat generalized overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the causes and solutions distinctly. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical or repetitive in transitions. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor lapses in flow occur, such as the abrupt sentence connection in 'So that individuals with busy schedules are also able to dump their waste propely', reflecting solid intermediate organizational skills.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and topical phrases like 'ecosystem', 'unawareness', and 'accelerated rate'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'recyle' instead of 'recycle', 'quantiy' instead of 'quantity', 'proritise' instead of 'prioritize', 'devestating' instead of 'devastating', and 'propely' instead of 'properly'. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score because control over less common vocabulary is not yet fully consistent or precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses ('if this issue remains unaddressed, results would be catastrophic') and relative clauses effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('another group of people who is educated' instead of 'are') and minor missing articles or preposition slips. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate, while complex attempts show a good awareness of varied sentence patterns.
