Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is inevitably true that citizens in most parts of the world donot often recycle thier waste. There is so much waste that is dumped without being recycled. In my opininon, there are several reasons to it and the solutions are discussed in further paragraphs.

To begin with, the most prudent cause is poor environmental awareness amongst inviduals. For instance, people often throw the plastic bottles of water or beverages with other garbage instead of using the recycling bins or centers as they are less known to the fact that it takes millions of years for plastic to get decomposed. Thus, the plastic waste gets accumulated at the dumping sites instead of being reused.

Additionally, many country lack reforms to mandate or elevate the need of recycling. To elaborate, Canada has separate days allocated for different types of garbage collection. The regular household waste which can be easily decomposed is collected once every week while the recycling waste is collected in alternate weeks. But this is not the case with majority of the world. They donot similar streamlined waste management system.

Though it seems as a challenging task, there are quite a few easy solutions to tackle this problem. Firstly, society should be made aware of the adverse efftects of not recycling their rubbish and this can be done by setting up awareness camps, advertisements and asking locally renowned people to spreat the message. Secondly, the government should make firm waste disposal laws with prominent focus on recycling. A fine should be imposed on those who donot abide by it.

To sum up, it is clearly visible that people are less inclined towards recycling their waste as discussed in earlier pragraphs but it can be resolved with the help of efforts mentioned in latter part.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the reasons behind low recycling rates and providing viable solutions to change this behavior. There is a clear position presented throughout the essay. The reasons are relevant, such as poor environmental awareness and a lack of governmental reforms, yet some ideas remain slightly under-developed or rely on broad generalizations. For instance, the example contrasting Canada with the 'majority of the world' lacks specific evidence and is treated too generally. To move towards a higher level, the writer would need to fully extend and support all arguments with deeper explanation and more precise, globally applicable examples rather than brief assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently arranged from the introduction, through body paragraphs focusing on causes and solutions, to a summarizing conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each new idea or section starting in a logical place. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to link ideas, utilizing transition markers such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'Firstly'. However, a minor mechanical feel occasionally appears in the transitions, preventing the cohesion from being entirely seamless. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's argument without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended meaning. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'prudent cause', 'accumulated at the dumping sites', and 'streamlined waste management system', demonstrating an awareness of appropriate academic style. However, there are some word-choice and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including typographical errors like 'donot', 'thier', 'opininon', 'inviduals', and 'efftects'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical range from achieving higher precision and flexibility. More rigorous proofreading would eliminate these mechanical slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and relative clauses effectively, as seen in 'people often throw the plastic bottles... instead of using the recycling bins... as they are less known to the fact that...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions in 'many country lack reforms' and prepositional awkwardness like 'there are several reasons to it'. Despite these persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, the sentences are generally clear and rarely impede communication. To reach a higher standard, the writer would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences with tighter control over pluralization and articles.
