Why do you think this is?

What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

Yes this is a big problem in every country, but we can not say this is country wide problem, this is related to human nature, I know many people who never keep rubbish in their house or other places, but yes there are many others which they does.

To avoid this, we should start some awareness of impact of this kind of behaviour.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You recognise that recycling is an issue and offer one possible response: raising awareness of its impact. However, the task asks both why people do not recycle and what can be done, and neither part is developed sufficiently. The comment that the issue is “related to human nature” is too general to explain specific causes, while the contrast between people who “never keep rubbish” and those who do is unclear and does not directly explain recycling behaviour. Your proposed awareness campaign is relevant, but you give no detail about who should provide it or how it could change habits. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, so there is not enough explanation or supporting example to address the task adequately. Develop several clear reasons and practical solutions, with examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the first paragraph refers to the problem and a possible cause, and the second introduces a solution with “To avoid this”. This gives the reader a simple overall direction. However, the first paragraph combines several points in one long sentence, and the relationship between “people who never keep rubbish” and recycling is not clear. The contrast signalled by “but” does not lead to a fully explained distinction. The second paragraph is very brief and does not connect the proposed awareness-raising to a specific outcome. Use separate paragraphs for causes and solutions, and develop each with a clear topic sentence followed by explanation or an example.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate a few basic ideas, using relevant terms such as “recycle”, “rubbish”, “human nature” and “impact”. These choices show awareness of the topic, but the range is narrow and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, which limits clarity. For example, “country wide problem” is not the most natural way to describe the scale of an issue, and “start some awareness” does not express the intended action clearly. The repeated use of general words such as “problem”, “people” and “this” also leaves ideas vague. Build a more precise topic vocabulary and use natural collocations, such as “raise public awareness”, “recycling facilities” and “household waste”, while ensuring each phrase accurately conveys your meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to connect ideas in a longer sentence using “but” and “I know”, and you also use a simple sentence to introduce a solution. However, sentence structures are limited, and errors in agreement, sentence boundaries and punctuation make parts of the first paragraph difficult to follow. In “there are many others which they does”, the relative clause and verb agreement are faulty; “we can not say this is country wide problem” also needs an article and clearer sentence punctuation. The opening contains several independent ideas joined mainly by commas, creating a run-on sentence. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then add accurate complex structures with relative clauses and conjunctions.
