ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Ma,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I would not be able to continue with the evening course I register for last month due to my busy schedule at my office. I would prefer to commence the study next term.
In all honesty, my manager notified us last friday that we would be coming to office Saturday and Sunday in order to meet up with the given targets because the year is coming to end soon. And because the course for weekend, it makes it difficult for me to continue.
However, I planned to start the course next year because we would not be going to the office on weekends. I have discussed the program with my manager and he has assured me that.
I think I still neeed your counsel on this because I do not want to miss this great opportunity. This is because I need this course to apply for a promotion in my place of work. I want to know if I should ask for a leave or I should wait till next year.
Please your advise would help me in my decision. Thanks.
Yours faithfully,
Yemet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three points clearly: you explain that weekend work prevents attendance, state that you hope to resume next year, and ask whether to request leave or wait. The reason for needing the course—to apply for a promotion—also gives the request a clear purpose. These relevant details and the consistent focus make the response effective. To strengthen it further, develop the practical request more precisely: for example, ask whether your enrolment can be deferred, whether fees can be transferred, or what formal steps are required. The statement that your manager “has assured me that” is left incomplete, so the reader does not learn exactly what has been assured. Overall, the purpose and requested advice are clear, with a little room for fuller development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the problem, explain the new weekend work, describe your plan to study next year, and finish by asking for advice. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “However” and “This is because” make the relationships between ideas clear. Some connections could be smoother and more precise. For instance, “And because the course for weekend” is an awkward transition, while “I have discussed the program with my manager and he has assured me that” does not complete the idea, leaving the reference unclear. A more direct progression from the work commitment to the request for deferral would make the letter feel more polished, but the overall organisation is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal request, including “commence,” “counsel,” “promotion,” and “opportunity.” These choices help communicate the importance of the course and your need for guidance. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, such as “meet up with the given targets,” “the course for weekend,” and “your advise.” The spelling slip “neeed” also reduces accuracy, and “program” may be less suitable than “course” when referring to the class itself. Aim for conventional formal expressions and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would make the letter sound more fluent and professional without changing its clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple and more complex forms, such as the reason clause beginning “because” and the conditional question “if I should ask for a leave or I should wait.” Meaning remains clear despite some grammatical errors. In the opening, “the evening course I register for last month” needs a past-tense form, and “because the course for weekend” is missing a verb and article. The sentence “he has assured me that” also needs a completed clause. There are further issues with articles and sentence construction in “coming to office” and “because the year is coming to end soon.” Review tense consistency, complete clauses, and article use, while retaining your attempts at varied sentence structures.
