ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Professor,
I hope you're going well. I am writing this email to request you about a course transfer from the current semester to the next upcoming term. I would really appreciate your guidance to figure out this situation.
I am experiencing a huge amount of workload currently, as my father has just opened his new restaurant and I am helping him overtime there during the evening as well. I have opted a web development course, but the timing for the lectures do not match my current schedule at all. As there is a option available to postpone any courses, as I have selected enough subjects already to fulfil my credit requirements this running term.
If this course gets taken away from this term, I would be able to manage my study and workload very comfortably as there would be enough time available to prepare for other subjects. I would like to study and attend all the morning lectures of other courses and will try to help my parents in the evening as they do not have any staff available for that period of time.
I am very unfortunate that I have to sacrifice my study, but this will not be happening in the next term, as my father is planning to hire more workers as soon as they grow financially. I am happy to take any advice or suggestion you might have after understanding my problem.
I was hoping if you can make changes in my timetable and I assure you, I won't let this overtime work affect my grades.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and looking forward to seeing you in the university.
Yours sincerely,
Japel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain the situation regarding your father's restaurant and the resulting workload, state your desire to transfer the course to the next term, and ask for guidance. The tone is appropriate for a formal email to a professor. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have maintained a consistent position throughout the text, ensuring the reader understands your constraints and your proposed solution. The response is fully relevant to the task instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the explanation of the situation from the proposed solution and the request for advice. Cohesive devices such as 'as', 'if', and 'but' are used to link ideas, although some transitions are slightly repetitive. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your line of reasoning from the initial problem to the final request. The use of 'Yours sincerely' and the formal opening are appropriate for the context.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'workload', 'postpone', 'credit requirements', and 'timetable'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'request you about' (should be 'request a transfer') and 'opted a web development course' (should be 'enrolled in'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You attempt to use more sophisticated language, which is positive, though some phrasing remains slightly unnatural. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'I was hoping if you can' (should be 'I was hoping you could') and 'the timing... do not match' (subject-verb agreement error), the meaning remains clear throughout. There are occasional slips in tense and preposition usage, but the majority of your sentences are error-free. The punctuation is generally accurate, supporting the flow of the letter. You have shown a good attempt at using complex structures, which contributes to the overall clarity of your request.
