IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir

I am writing to inform you that I want to stop my evening course which I joined last week.

I enrolled in the English evening course on Monday and Wednesday. But now I am too busy to continue. My manager has changed my work time and now I have to work until 8pm every day. Because of this, I am late for the class and I miss many lessons. Also, I have family responsibilities at home, so I do not have time to do my homework. For this reason, I think I cannot continue now.

I would like to take this same course in the next term. I have already paid the full fees for this term, so I would like to know if my payment can be moved to the next term. I am still interested in studying at your college.

Could you please give me some advice about what to do now? Do I need to fill any form to postpone my course? And will there be a place for me next term?

Thank you for your help

Yours faithfully,

Hevanpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work schedule and family commitments, state your intention to postpone the course, and ask relevant questions about the administrative process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an educational institution. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have provided sufficient detail to make the request understandable and professional, meeting all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraphs explain the situation and the request, and the conclusion provides a polite closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Because of this', 'Also', and 'For this reason' to link your sentences. While the transitions are somewhat simple, they are used accurately and effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, ensuring the reader understands your request without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'family responsibilities', 'enrolled', and 'postpone' are used correctly and fit the formal context well. There are no significant spelling errors, and your word choice is generally precise. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common vocabulary related to academic or administrative settings. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I have already paid the full fees for this term, so I would like to know if my payment can be moved to the next term.' Punctuation is handled well, and the tone remains consistent. While there are no major errors that impede communication, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. Increasing the variety of sentence types would further enhance your score.
