IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to share my concern regarding attending an evening course which I have recently enrolled in and want to take the course next term instead.
Soon after enrolling into an evening course I received an offer letter from mining company to audit their site for 3 months for which they are offering me a good remuneration. I accepted their offer but now this would become difficult for me to attend evening classes because I have to work rotationally with other workers instead of fixed morning shifts.
I am worried that doing this job can bring gap in my academic schedule but I planned to continue learning something new via access to online resources which allows me to study at my own pace and time.
I am still interested in studying at your institution but as I have mentioned my situation, it would be really great if you could please adjust my fees with next term course. Until that time I would be done with my temporary job position.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Joshua Deher

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the situation regarding your new job offer, stated your desire to defer your studies to the next term, and requested advice on the fee adjustment. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your request for advice is more explicit; while you ask about fee adjustment, you could also ask for specific guidance on the administrative process for deferral to fully satisfy the 'ask for advice' requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Soon after' and 'Until that time', which help the flow. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. To improve, use more varied linking words or phrases to connect your ideas, such as 'consequently' or 'furthermore', to ensure a smoother progression of information throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'good remuneration' and 'academic schedule' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'enrolling into' (should be 'enrolling in') and 'bring gap' (should be 'create a gap'). While these errors do not impede communication, using more precise collocations would elevate your score. You have a good grasp of formal register, which is essential for this task type.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I planned to continue' (should be 'I plan to continue') and 'with next term course' (should be 'with the next term's course'). Additionally, the sentence 'I am writing this letter to share my concern regarding attending an evening course which I have recently enrolled in and want to take the course next term instead' is slightly cluttered. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help you achieve a higher band.
