ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or mam,
I am writing to express my concern for discontinuing the evening course in which I recently enrolled to enhance my programming skills.
As I discussed with you in our last meeting, My family is planning to visit our grandparents next month, who live in Australia. Unfortunately, I have to join my parents because my grandparents want me to see as well and look after them during the final last stage of their life.
While you already had my academic qualification record, which enlighten my hard work and dedication towards my education. As I had already paid my course fees last week, and according to your company policies, it is impossible to refund back the money. Fortunately, after coming back from Australia I got another month of for my project preparation. While preparing for my assignments during that period, I would love to join back to resume my course, which is only for four weeks.
I would greatly appreciate, if you could take my request into consideration, and also if you have any advice, which will be better while rejoining the course, please share with me on this email.
I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
Your's faithfully,
Rashim

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You explained your situation regarding the family trip to Australia, stated your intention to resume the course later, and requested advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is slightly hindered by some awkward phrasing, such as 'discontinuing the evening course' when you actually mean 'withdrawing from' or 'postponing'. Additionally, the explanation regarding the refund policy is a bit confusingly worded. Overall, the message is clear and the purpose of the letter is fully achieved.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different points of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate. For example, the use of 'While' at the beginning of the third paragraph is grammatically disconnected from the rest of the sentence. Referencing is generally clear, but some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they connect ideas logically rather than just starting new sentences would help improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'dedication', 'qualification', and 'consideration'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'refund back the money' (redundant), 'got another month of for my project' (incorrect preposition/spelling), and 'discontinuing the course' (which sounds like you are stopping it permanently rather than pausing). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'Dear Sir or mam' (should be 'Madam'), 'My family' (capitalization error), 'grandparents want me to see as well' (missing object), and 'Your's faithfully' (incorrect possessive). Additionally, there are issues with sentence fragments and punctuation. While you attempt complex structures, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from being considered highly accurate. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation will significantly improve your score.
