Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam
I am formally writing to inform you about an issue I have facing with the course that I have enrolled. The advantages of this course are imperative for my career, albeit one thing is stagnating to continue it is the time.
Currently, I am a full time worker, and doing work and study together. Since many days, I have been experiencing that due to extended work hours, I am not able to join the classes on time, eventually impacting my overall growth and study in a detrimental way.
Instead of continuing this course, I have decided to quit rejoin it in the next term. It will not only help me to focus but also help me to ameliorate my overall growth.
I would like to get a guidance from you. If you came up with another pragmatic solution, then I will definitely think about it.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Deep Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work-life balance, state your intention to defer the course to the next term, and request advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'stagnating to continue it is the time', which makes the reason for your difficulty slightly less clear than it could be. Overall, the purpose of the letter is achieved, and the reader understands your request perfectly well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices like 'Instead of' and 'not only... but also' to link ideas. However, the transition between the first and second paragraph is a bit abrupt. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including some sophisticated items like 'imperative', 'detrimental', 'ameliorate', and 'pragmatic'. While these words are used effectively, there are some minor collocation errors, such as 'issue I have facing' (should be 'issue I have been facing') and 'get a guidance' (should be 'get some guidance'). Despite these small slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely and shows an attempt to use a wider range of language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'enrolled' instead of 'enrolled in', 'doing work and study together' (which is slightly informal), and 'quit rejoin it' (which is missing a conjunction or preposition). Additionally, 'Since many days' is an incorrect collocation; 'For many days' or 'Lately' would be more accurate. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the overall meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
