explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this email finds you well.
I am writing this email to change my evening classes of Marketing Management course. I have enrolled for 4:00pm to 5:30pm classes for 6041-Marketing Management course. I am working from 3pm to 11pm on weekend evenings, it is difficult to attend class during that time of period.
On the portal, I saw that we have one batch available in morning for this course which is taken by same professor. I try to enroll myself in that batch but system do not allow me to do because of administer issues, I would like to swap my evening classes with morning batch, if possible. Additionally, can you please provide me any other solution of my problem because it is affecting my studies and work schedule at the same time.
I hope you can provide me an appropriate solution of my problem. Looking forward for your response.
Yours faithfiully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the conflict between your work schedule and the course timing, state your desire to switch to the morning batch, and request advice on how to proceed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of the 'administer issues' is vague, and the request for 'any other solution' could be more specific. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are addressed with equal depth and clarity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the situation, the proposed solution, and the request for advice. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'however' (implied) are used, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enrolled', 'appropriate solution', and 'schedule'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'during that time of period' (which is redundant) and 'administer issues' (should be 'administrative issues'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, there is limited use of less common or more sophisticated collocations that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focus on using more precise academic or professional terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this email to change my evening classes of Marketing Management course' (missing articles), 'system do not allow me' (subject-verb agreement), and 'Looking forward for your response' (preposition error). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage, subject-verb agreement, and correct prepositional phrases. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
