ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Respected Mr. Smith,
I hope this letter finds you well, as a newly enrolled student in your class, I am writing this letter to inform you that I cannot continue to do my ai course this term.
Actually, I live in this city all alone and have to manage my other study, job and house by my own. Being a student there are many expanses like fees, grocery and rent that I have to manage each month, for this I got a part time job that has a fixed timing in the evening. Having the schedule for my ai class same time it is very difficult for me to manage everything alone.
For this term, I have decided that I will focus on my other studies and part time job to save some money for further course and will take my ai evening course with you next term. I will try to stay connection with you through your online videos to make myself known with that course.
Moving further, I want to request you that if it suites you can I join weekend classes with you for now and study that ai course in detail in next term. Looking forward for your response.
Your's sincerely,
Kom

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work and study commitments, state your intention to defer the course, and ask for advice regarding weekend classes. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an instructor. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your constraints and your proposed solution. To reach a higher band, ensure that the request for advice is more explicitly framed as a question about your options, rather than just a suggestion for a specific alternative.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Actually', 'For this term', and 'Moving further' to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, but the overall progression of the letter is easy to follow and the paragraphing is appropriate.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enrolled', 'commitments', and 'manage'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'expanses' (should be 'expenses'), 'stay connection' (should be 'stay connected'), and 'make myself known with' (should be 'familiarize myself with'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Expanding your range to include more topic-specific collocations would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'by my own' (should be 'on my own'), 'Having the schedule... same time it is' (a dangling modifier/run-on), and 'if it suites' (should be 'suits'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some comma splices in the opening paragraph. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence structure will improve your accuracy.
