IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I am unable to start the course in this term due to overload at work and family responsibilities which are causing me to manage the time for the classes. As a result, I don't have enough time to attend the classes regularly.

I would like to postpone my studies in next term as I won't be able to attend the classes due to excessive work load and personal problems at my home.

I want to ask for an advise related to postponing my course to next term as I don't have any knowledge about it. I want to know about the procedure of the process and do I need to pay the fees again to enroll in the next course? I would be very thankful to you.

I will look forward for your reply.

Yours Faithfully,

Balbhader Singh Gill

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work and family commitments, state your intention to postpone the course, and ask for advice regarding the procedure and fees. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, you mention the 'excessive work load' in both the first and second paragraphs. To improve, ensure each paragraph adds new information rather than restating previous points. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an appropriate opening and closing. There is a clear progression of ideas from the explanation of the problem to the request for information. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'As a result' and 'In addition' (implied by structure), though the flow could be improved with more varied linking words. The paragraphing is sufficient, and the message is easy to follow throughout. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of cohesive devices to connect sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your situation clearly. Phrases like 'family responsibilities' and 'postpone my studies' are accurate and appropriate. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'manage the time for the classes' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'an advise' (advice is an uncountable noun). You also repeat the word 'classes' several times. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and ensure correct usage of uncountable nouns. The current range is sufficient for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'in next term' (should be 'next term') and 'I will look forward for your reply' (should be 'look forward to'). The use of 'do I need to pay' is a direct question, which is acceptable in this context, but ensure subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are consistent. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do occur with some frequency, which limits the score to a 6.0.
