IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you about my decision for evening course and might be pursue on another year.

Being a part time student for an evening course, it is very inconvenient for me to focus on my primary study which is Mental Health Recovery in same college. Due to this reason, I decided to discontinue my part time childcare program. Moreover, I am not able to manage personal and professional at a time. Hence, it provide me mental stress. I have keen interest in childcare program and made a decision to continue on next term. On that time, I will be graduated from my first study and can handle job and part time course together.

I would like to request you to give me a advice which might be helpful to make a final decision. Additionally, I am willing to hear any decision as it will make my life worthy.

I hope you would take suggestion into your concern and act accordingly.

Yours sincerely,

Arpan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your conflicting studies, state your intention to defer to the next term, and request advice. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of why you cannot manage both commitments is a bit repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons are articulated with more precision and that the request for advice is more clearly linked to the specific administrative policies of the college.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the situation from the request for advice. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'Additionally', although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the referencing in the first paragraph ('my decision for evening course') is slightly ambiguous, which makes the initial purpose of the letter feel a bit disjointed. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'inconvenient', 'discontinue', and 'professional'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'might be pursue on another year' instead of 'might pursue it next year' and 'give me a advice' (advice is uncountable). The phrase 'make my life worthy' is also unnatural in this context. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('it provide me'), missing articles ('on next term'), and incorrect verb forms ('I will be graduated'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly the use of articles and verb tenses. Your attempt at complex sentences is a positive step, but ensure that the internal grammar of these clauses is accurate to avoid distracting the reader.
