IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 9.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding the **evening Business Communication course** that I recently enrolled in. Unfortunately, I have found that I am unable to continue attending the classes.
Over the past few weeks, my workload has increased significantly because I have started a new full-time job. As a result, I often work late in the evenings and cannot attend the course regularly. I do not want to miss important lessons, as this would affect my learning and overall performance.
I would like to continue my studies, but I would prefer to take the same course next term when my work schedule is expected to be more flexible. If possible, I would appreciate it if my enrollment and course fee could be transferred to the next available intake.
Could you please advise me on the best way to proceed? I would like to know whether I need to complete any withdrawal forms or if there are any additional fees for postponing my enrollment.
Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to your advice.
Yours faithfully,
Satwinder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 9.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the situation regarding your new job and the resulting time constraints. You also state your intention to defer the course to the next term and appropriately ask for advice regarding the administrative process. The tone is consistently formal and appropriate for a letter to an educational institution. All parts of the prompt are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 9.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraphs explain the situation and the request, and the conclusion provides a polite closing. Cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately,' 'As a result,' and 'If possible' are used naturally to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, ensuring a smooth flow of information throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal letter. Phrases such as 'enrolled in,' 'workload has increased significantly,' and 'expected to be more flexible' are used accurately. The language is precise and fits the context well. While the vocabulary is not overly complex, it is natural and perfectly suited to the task requirements. There are no errors in word choice or collocation, and the tone remains professional throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 9.0
The writing is highly accurate with a variety of sentence structures. You successfully use complex sentences, such as 'I would appreciate it if my enrollment and course fee could be transferred to the next available intake,' which demonstrates good control over conditional structures. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no grammatical errors. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the overall control of grammar is excellent, reflecting a high level of proficiency.
