IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hi Sir/Ma'am,

I am writing today to express my concern regarding a course that I have pursued recently. I have enrolled in an evening course; however, I am unable to continue it this term due to my hectic schedule. Therefore, I would like to take it next term instead of current one.

The foremost reason behind discontinuation is my current job which is necessary to get an experience in my educational field. Moreover, I have 2 years old daughter so I need to take care of her in the morning that keeps me very busy all the day.

I would like to change the term for my current evening course as I am thinking to enroll next term when my daughter will start day care for her and I will get spare time.

Furthermore, before I discontinue the course, I would like to take an advice from you regarding my current situation. Please let me know what best I can do about it.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Yours Faithfully,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your hectic schedule, state your intention to defer the course to the next term, and request advice on the procedure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the 'hectic schedule' or the specific nature of the course to make the letter feel more authentic and fully developed. However, all requirements are met, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'however,' 'therefore,' 'moreover,' and 'furthermore' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences feels more natural. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'discontinuation,' 'hectic schedule,' and 'pursued.' There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'take an advice' (advice is uncountable) and 'all the day' (should be 'all day'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the range of less common or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on collocations and the correct usage of uncountable nouns will help you improve your lexical precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I have 2 years old daughter' (should be 'a two-year-old daughter') and 'I am thinking to enroll' (should be 'thinking of enrolling'). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and prepositions. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To achieve a higher score, aim for greater accuracy in complex sentence structures and ensure consistent control over basic grammar rules.
