IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my situation regarding the course that I am pursuing in the evening time.
I am very interested in the skill-building course. But I cannot continue this course because of my work schedule. The reason behind this is that sometimes I missed the session because of the workload and was also not able to see the recorded videos of that particular class.
Additionally, I want to learn every single part of this course so that it can be beneficial for me in my future job. But if I am not attending the classes and not applying the strategies, how can I improve myself?
I would appreciate it if you could allow me to see the recorded session afterward or arrange a trainer for reliability so that whenever I get time, I can take the class.
I look forward to hearing a response from you on this matter at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Amarjeet Kour.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work schedule, state your desire to defer to the next term, and ask for advice. However, the task instructions specifically asked you to explain that you would like to take the course next term instead, but your request in the fourth paragraph asks for recorded sessions or a trainer instead of explicitly requesting a deferral. This slight misalignment with the prompt's core requirement limits the score. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the explanation of the problem from the proposed solutions. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'But', though the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and conveys your meaning clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'at your earliest convenience' and 'skill-building course'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor issues with collocation, such as 'express my situation' (better: 'explain my situation') and 'arrange a trainer for reliability' (which is slightly unclear). The language is functional and sufficient for the requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter, but it lacks the precision and variety of more advanced lexical choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I missed the session' (should be 'I have been missing' or 'I miss' to match the present tense context) and 'if I am not attending' (should be 'if I do not attend'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, your control over basic grammar is good, and your punctuation is generally correct throughout the letter.
