IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to inform you that I am enrolled in an evening slot in this course. But I have other classes at the same time because I am pursuing ECE. My ECE Classes take full day from 10 a.m. to 5p.m. It is hard for me to join this course in evening.

I want to continue this course in the next term. Until then my current course would be finished. By joining this course in upcoming session would be best for me as I will free after a month. Also, I can concentrate more when I do not have any other pressure of studies.

Moreover, I want to ask for advice from you that what I can do anything else which would be better for me. Is there any other option you want to recommend me? Please suggest me.

I will eagerly be waiting for your reply.

yours sincerely,

Sandeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the situation, stating the intention to defer, and asking for advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of the ECE course could be more clearly linked to the evening course schedule to show why they are incompatible. The request for advice is also a bit repetitive. Despite these minor points, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover' and 'Until then', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The overall structure supports the message effectively without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their situation clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'pursuing ECE' (which is vague) and 'pressure of studies'. While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the precision and variety of more advanced lexical choices. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is appropriate for the formal context of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'My ECE Classes take full day' (missing article), 'By joining this course in upcoming session would be' (incorrect sentence structure), and 'what I can do anything else' (redundant phrasing). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the message. The punctuation is generally correct, and the formal tone is maintained throughout.
