IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to switch my course to the next semester. I would like to bring to your attention that I was enrolled in an evening course, but it is getting too busy for me to handle everything.

Firstly, I would like to explain that after my work, I do not get enough time, and I have to rush to my classes. This situation makes me so stressed because after work I am already exhausted, and sometimes classes clash with my children's pickup timings.

Furthermore, I would like to mention that I prefer to study in a peaceful environment with full concentration. I believe that will mostly be possible in the morning.

Finally, I would like to request that you help me to resolve this matter. I hope you understand my request and take the necessary steps as soon as possible.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to receiving your response.

Yours faithfully,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your busy schedule and the conflict with childcare responsibilities. You also state your intention to defer the course to the next term and ask for advice on the necessary procedures. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific course name or your student ID to make the request more realistic and professional. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to transition between ideas. While these are effective, they are somewhat standard; incorporating a wider variety of linking phrases would improve the flow further. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, ensuring that the message is conveyed without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'exhausted', 'concentration', and 'consideration' correctly. The language is natural and appropriate for a formal request. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the 'less common' items that would elevate the response to a higher band. For instance, instead of 'getting too busy', more precise academic or professional collocations could be used. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate your needs clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and your meaning is always clear. There are no major errors that impede communication. You use a variety of structures, such as 'I would like to bring to your attention that...' and 'I hope you understand my request and take...'. To improve, you could incorporate more complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If it were possible to defer...'), to demonstrate greater control over a wider range of structures.
