IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I could not continue the computer learning course at the evening because of some unseen circumstances.
As you know, I took admission in the computer course on 24 July 2026 at your institute. However, I would not able to continue the lectures at the evening time as my mother is suffering from some health issues so I had to spend my entire day with her for observation. Yesterday evening, she had to be hospitalized and necessitated immediate medical attention so that is why I decided not to continue the further classes.
Now, I am thinking of getting admission in the next term. However, on the other hand I am planning to choose the online session. I am a little bewildered between these two situations.
I would appreciate if you could inform me the next due dates of both online as well as offline courses.
I am looking forward to your prompt response.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your mother's health, state your intention to defer to the next term, and ask for advice regarding the online versus offline options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that the explanation of your situation is more concise to allow more room for developing the request for advice. For example, you could have asked more specific questions about the curriculum differences between the online and offline modes to better demonstrate your engagement with the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'on the other hand' to link ideas. However, the transition between the explanation of your mother's health and the decision to stop classes is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother, avoiding mechanical repetition of phrases like 'I would not able to'.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'unseen circumstances', 'hospitalized', and 'bewildered'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'took admission in' (should be 'enrolled in') and 'computer learning course' (more naturally 'computer course'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise'. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I would not able to' (missing 'be'), 'at the evening' (should be 'in the evening'), and 'getting admission in' (should be 'enrolling in'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, pay closer attention to verb forms and preposition usage. Increasing the number of error-free sentences will help you move toward a higher band.
