IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am student from your college and i opt the new program in management for next semester. I am facing one issue regarding that course, it is in evening time and i get to know after i paid the fee for that subject. In evening I have my internship job, which provided by your institute and I can not leave that opportunity.

The fee for the program is non refundable. So, I want to sift this subject for the next semester because i really want to study it. This course is really helpful for my career that how to manage the business.

If any chance I get the morning class instead of evening. I will able to attend that class and it will save my lot of time. I know it will be hard to maintain internship and course at a same time but i will manage because after completing this program and internship I am able to apply for job in multinational companies.

Best regard

Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the situation, stating the desired outcome (deferral), and asking for advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why you cannot attend the evening class is clear, but the request for advice is slightly vague, as you primarily ask for a morning class rather than seeking broader guidance on the situation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are explored with equal depth and that the request for advice is more explicitly stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition between the explanation of the fee and the request to shift the subject could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'that how to manage the business', which disrupts the flow. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in light of this') would improve the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'non-refundable', 'internship', and 'multinational companies'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'opt the new program' (should be 'enrolled in') and 'sift this subject' (likely meant 'shift' or 'defer'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your range of vocabulary and focusing on correct collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and articles (e.g., 'I am student', 'it is in evening time', 'I will able to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy will significantly enhance your writing.
