IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to apprise you that I am your student in Englisg course. I am currently unable to continue my evening course.
At the moment, I have a full time job, and my schedule changes recently. Now, my job will be finished at 10 pm. Consequently, I have less time in the evenings and it is daunting for me to join evening class. Unfortunately, I am not able to continue the course at this time. I think that it is better for me to stop this for now instead of missing important lessons.
I would like to ask you that if it is possible to reschedule my course to a later date.
Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Manpreet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points: it explains the situation (work schedule change), states the desired action (rescheduling), and asks for advice. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement (135 words), which negatively impacts the development of ideas. The explanation of the work situation is somewhat brief, and the request for advice is quite generic. To improve, you should expand on the details of your work situation and provide more context regarding your commitment to the course to ensure the letter meets the length requirement and demonstrates a more professional tone.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used, though the body paragraphs are quite short. Cohesive devices such as 'At the moment', 'Consequently', and 'Unfortunately' are used to link ideas, although the flow is somewhat mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, but the brevity of the text limits the ability to demonstrate more sophisticated cohesive links. To reach a higher band, ensure that your paragraphs are more balanced and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'full time job' and 'evening course' are functional but basic. There is a spelling error ('Englisg') and some minor collocation issues, such as 'my schedule changes recently' (should be 'has changed'). While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more specific professional terminology related to course enrollment or scheduling would enhance your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I am your student in Englisg course' (missing article 'an' and preposition 'the') and 'my schedule changes recently' (incorrect tense). Additionally, 'I would like to ask you that if it is possible' is slightly awkward; 'I would like to ask if it is possible' would be more natural. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
