IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir
I am Writing to request that i take my evening course next term instead of this term.
I enrolled in the course because i want to improve my skills. However, I have recently become very busy with my full-time job .I am working extra hours, and I find it difficult to attend the evnoig classes regularly. I do not want to miss important lessons.
I would like to ask if it is possible to transfer my registration to the same course next term. I am still very interested in studying, but I need more time to manage my work schedule. If there are any forms or fees required for this change, please let me know. I will complete the process as soon as possible.
Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Ravi Chauhan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is explained, the desired action is stated, and advice is requested. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While the tone is appropriate for a formal letter, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To improve, you should expand on your current situation or the specific nature of the course to ensure you comfortably meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'If', and 'Therefore' (implied) are used to link ideas. The progression of information is easy to follow. To reach a higher band, you could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between your current work situation and the request to transfer is even smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and conveys the message clearly. You use appropriate formal phrases like 'enrolled in the course', 'transfer my registration', and 'manage my work schedule'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common expressions. There is a minor spelling error ('evnoig' instead of 'evening'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to professional or academic contexts to demonstrate a broader range of lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are some minor errors, such as inconsistent capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I') and a missing space after a period. While these errors do not impede communication, they suggest a lack of attention to detail. To achieve a higher band, ensure consistent use of capitalization and punctuation, and try to incorporate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice.
