IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you about the discontinuation of my evening course. As because of my increased work hours, I spent most of my time at work completing the tasks and as a result there is no energy and time left in me to invest in any other thing but for only completing the basic household chores.

However, I am trying my best to to solve this issue, as i am planning to make proper schedule to manage time for my work and studies. In addition, I already asked by employer to reduce my working hours, so then i can manage my studies along with my work.

At last, i want to ask for your advice to assist me in this situation as you are an expert at time management and doing multitasking. I will be very grateful for your help.

Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your situation, stating your intention to defer, and asking for advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention being busy, you could have provided more specific details about the course or the nature of your work to make the letter more convincing. The response meets the minimum length requirement, but expanding slightly on the 'why' and the 'what' would help you move into a higher band by providing more depth and clarity to your request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your message. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'In addition' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the explanation of your situation and your request for advice feels a bit abrupt. Additionally, some of the phrasing, such as 'At last', is not the most natural way to introduce a final point in a formal letter; 'Finally' or 'Lastly' would be more appropriate. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between paragraphs will enhance the overall flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, such as 'discontinuation', 'invest', and 'manage'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices. For example, 'As because of' is redundant and grammatically incorrect; you should use either 'As' or 'Because of'. The phrase 'doing multitasking' is also unnatural; 'multitasking' is usually used as a noun or verb on its own. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

Your writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the text. For example, 'I already asked by employer' should be 'I have already asked my employer'. There are also issues with capitalization, such as 'i' instead of 'I', and 'sir' should be capitalized as 'Sir'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure in the first paragraph is a bit run-on. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will significantly improve your accuracy.
